FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)

FAO was founded in 1945 with a mandate to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity, and to better the condition of rural populations.Today, FAO is one of the largest specialized agencies in the United Nations system and the lead agency for agriculture, forestry, fisheries and rural development. An intergovernmental organization, FAO has 183 member countries plus one member organization, the European Community.

Since its inception, FAO has worked to alleviate poverty and hunger by promoting agricultural development, improved nutrition and the pursuit of food security - defined as the access of all people at all times to the food they need for an active and healthy life.

Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) is the specialized agriculture agency of the Organization of American States, the OAS,and is based in Washington D.C.

The IICA mission is to support its 34 Member States in their pursuit of progress and prosperity in the hemisphere through the modernization of the rural sector, promotion of food security, and development of an agricultural sector that is competitive, technologically prepared, environmentally managed, and socially equitable.

The Institute's cooperation services are grouped into six Strategic Areas; Policies and Trade; science, technology and natural resources; agricultural health; rural development; training and education; and Information and Communications.

REDCAPA (Red de Instituciones Vinculadas a la Capacitación en Economía y Políticas Agrícolas en América Latina y el Caribe)

REDCAPA is a non-profit association of Latin American universities and research institutions which teaches agricultural economics and policy, and rural sustainable development through distance learning. The network promotes South-South cooperation, produces a scientific magazine and two electronic information bulletins distributed to more than 10.000 professionals, runs a virtual library and databases, redistributes scientific publications between its members and publishes teaching material. In addition, REDCAPA supports the exchange of lecturers and the preparation and execution of international joint research projects.

From its base in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the network offers a complete platform for distance education over the internet that is used by its member institutions to offer courses throughout the region on a variety of themes. The network secretariat supplies a server and a virtual campus, announces the courses via email and its website, administrates courses, organizes exams in more than 100 cities of the region and certifies the courses through its member institutions. Courses are at graduate and post-graduate level while MBA and PhD courses are also offered.
